Each class meets daily for 48 minutes. Course Materials: Students will need an instrument to participate in this program. Instruments may be purchased at most of the local music stores. Please consult your yellow pages in the music section of your phone book. Students will need a book (All for Strings Book I) for Beginning Strings), (All for Strings Book III) for Intermediate strings and Essentials for Strings (Advanced Strings) and GT Advanced Strings (Advanced Techniques for Strings-Hal Leonard). Students will have to replace any lost books. Students will need strings, rosin, and a shoulder rest. Cellos and Bass players will need a stop. Again, these items may be purchased at any of the local music stores. The school does have a few instruments for student use. However, these are usually assigned to students on Free and Reduced Lunch Programs. Please contact me if your situation warrants use of a school instrument. Students will receive music throughout the year for classroom use. If a student loses or misplaces their music parents are required to submit a note for a request for new copies. Parents may call or e-mail this information if this is more convenient. Music will not be reissued until I receive notification from a parent. Grading System: Students are graded on Class Participation, Playing Tests, Practice Letters, Worksheets, Student Work, Quizes, Tests and Concert Attendance. Concert Attendance is twenty five-percent of your child’s grade. Concert Attendance is Mandatory. Concert Attendance will be excused under certain circumstances. Students who have low concert attendance may not be allowed to attend specific field trips. If you child has transportation issues please contact me at your leisure. Many parents have offered to provide transportation for other students that live in nearby neighborhoods. We have two scheduled concerts. Our annual Winter Concert is in December and the Annual Spring Concert in May. Both Concerts will be held in the School Gym. Again, concert attendance is crucial and expected. Practice charts or letters will be implemented this year. Practice charts letters are to be presented to the director one week from the time they are distributed. These letters or charts must be signed by parents and returned to the director. If the student misplaces the practice letter parents may submit a letter stating that their child has practiced the required number of minutes. Each student is required to practice at least 100 minutes per week. Also, classroom participation is required. Students are expected to play in class daily. Classroom participation is twenty-five percent of the student’s grade. Parents will receive a strings interim at the end of 4 weeks of classroom instruction. Concert Attire: Students are required to wear black and white to all performances. Students need a dark dress shoe. Ladies should have a skirt that is below the knee and a white blouse or shirt. Ladies may wear pants to performances. Gentlemen should wear black pants and a white dress shirt. It is imperative that students adhere to the concert attire specified. Students have performance opportunities throughout the school year. Field Trips: Students are afforded opportunities for performances off the school site. These will take place periodically throughout the school year. Parents are highly encouraged to attend field trips. However, all chaperones must register with the Wake County Public Schools. Please contact the school for information. Students are responsible for all work missed during field trip attendance. Mr. Marecheau provides opportunities for students to participate in local and regional orchestral festivals and contests. THE STRING FAMILY/ Instruments we Offer Violin Unaltered for centuries, the violin is the most widely recognized orchestral instrument. It is the soprano of the family or the highest voice. High pitched, beautifully toned, it is often used as a lead or solo instrument, particularly in music demanding fast passages. Viola Played like the violin, the viola is slightly larger and tuned differently than the violin. Its larger tone chamber provides mellow qualities and enables the viola to produce somber, moody tones. As the alto voice, it adds depth and richness and is vital for ensembles and string quartets. Cello Known as the violoncello, it represents the tenor voice of the string family. A full octave below the viola and produces deep lower registers, it is supported on the floor by an endpin while the seated performer steadies the instrument between the knees. Bass The largest instrument, also known as double bass is played in either standing or sitting positions. It is the deepest voice of the string family and can function as rhythmic accompaniment or solo instrument. Its deep response gives foundation to the bottom of the ensemble. |
